I am unable to comment as it isn't a decision in our hands. I would hope it's on the better side of the options you mention :-)

What would be "later this year"? Q3 or Q4?

We are waiting for it to be released and hoping to adopt it directly into our products.

you are correct in that Bluetooth Mesh is not a part of the Bluetooth 5 specification. Bluetooth Mesh is expected sometime later this year, hopefully not too much later! It will be compatible with previous versions of Bluetooth low energy to accomodate all the products developed with v4.1 and v4.2. Initially long range features will not be in Mesh, but Mesh and long range used side by side offers some very exciting possibilities and probably offers the best efficiency in an overall network

I understand that the mesh capability is not dependent on 5 in that is it a separate developement, but combined with the 4x range improvements this takes BLE to new hieghts entirely.

The BTSIG made a mistake in not mandating at least one of those 3 PHYs to be present. But I guess Advertising Extension is what will allow 5 to be claimed given it can be done with 4.x hardware.

Really looking forward to seeing a softdevice that will allow us to play with those extended adverts. I am hoping that it will be as simple as presenting a long data buffer and telling the softdevice to make it happen so that it sets up the chained AUX packets and also auto selects the time and channel to use.

Conversely we will have call backs presenting the entire data when receiving so that the complex mechanisms behind all this is totally hidden from us application developers.
