Application for nRF9160 for Andriod/IOS

Hi,

I am just doing some testing using Nordic Thingy:91 and already available firmware and cloud. I am in the very initial stage of learning about it and preparing it for one of our most important projects. I need an application for Andriod or IOS. Can someone help me to get it or guide me if there is any information related to open source applications available?

I found the thingy:52 android app but I am not sure if it will work or not.

Thanks

  • Hi,

There is no dedicated app for the Thingy91/nrf9160DK provided by us at Nordic at this time. The example that comes with the Thingy 91 can be checked using a browser wit nRF Cloud. Here all the sensor information will be uploaded.

So for the Asset tracker application we do not have a dedicated Android\IOS app, but you can use a browser with the nRF Cloud web page.

We do have a YouTube video here ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ7hDzRULJQ

  • Hi
    Thanks for your reply.
I am in the learning and prototype phase and I have some questions regarding the future mass production perspective.
I am developing an asset tracking device. I just want to understand how feasible is if we use nrfCloud for it as it comes with a precompiled page for tracking and other sensor data.
The 2nd question is about firmware provided by Nordic. Can we rely on it as a commercial-scale product? If I watch videos and read data provided by Nordic then it seems to me that it will work out of the box for tracking purposes. But I also did a consultation with Nordic partners and they recommended I not use Nordic firmware. I am very confused that why we can't use firmware provided by Nordic.
As I said, I am developing a simple asset tracking device. I don't mind receiving sensor data although it is not our primary requirement.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi,

I think you should contact your reginal sales manager, you should get a better grasp of what we at Nordic provide; Contact us - nordicsemi.com , you can check the box for Cellular and Cloud service. Discus the project goals and what you want from Nordic so that you find the best way that we can aid you with your project.

It is a service we provide and should be capable of all your asset tracking needs. If you want to use the full precompiled page with all the things that can be done.

Yes, our examples for software\firmware can be used for commercial scale.

We have out of the box examples for asset tracking for both Thingy91 and our nRF9160 DK. The later does not have all the extra sensors but do provide GPS tracking.

I am not sure what you mean by this. If you plan to not use our examples as a solution that is ok, so developing you own application is also a good practice if that is what you are referring to. If you plan to not use out Software development kit then it will be more difficult and more work to get up and running with a project and we cant help as much.

I recommend that you start with our nRF9160 DK if you only need GPS and LTE, no sensor data.

We have a getting started guide that might be useful for getting started: Nordic Developer Academy - nordicsemi.com
We don't have that many tutorials as of now but more is in the works and will come shortly.
